About this Blog

This blog is built using ITNBlog, a custom fast static site generator (SSG). Static websites are faster and more secure since they do not rely on server-side components like databases or code engines that could be compromised.

Theme

This blog is powered by a custom theme, inspired by the BSDs.

Hosting and Infrastructure

The blog is hosted and served from three different locations: an httpd and relayd stack on OpenBSD, a FreeBSD jail, and a Raspberry Pi Zero W powered by NetBSD - and they all contain all the files. The VM on OpenBSD is located in the Netherlands at OpenBSD Amsterdam, a provider offering OpenBSD VMs on OpenBSD hosts, contributing a portion of earnings to the OpenBSD Foundation. Their setup is transparent and well-documented, enabling full understanding of the underlying infrastructure. Varnish is configured across the various hosts to use all three resources as backends, ensuring that data remains accessible to the reverse proxies even if one of the servers goes down.

Global Availability and Data Control

To increase availability and georeplication, several hosts (mainly FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD) act as reverse proxies, caching data with Varnish. This improves both availability and speed without relying on external CDNs, thus retaining complete data control. More details here: Building a Self-Hosted CDN for BSD Cafe Media

PowerDNS directs traffic to the nearest active host, whether original or cached.
